&. Has any representation, within four months, been made out at any time hitherto by the American Consul, in complaint of the action of the Authorities, with reference to American seamen? - As such representation has been made to me, and as far as my information and knowledge extends, to any other authority. I have always imagined that the U.S. Consul was well satisfied with the assistance given, he having to express himself in several communications.
9. What answer do you make to the Charge made by Commodore Abbot who has reason to believe that this "affair was a settled and arranged affair to which officers of this Colony 'lent themselves', if they did not 'connive at it' to enable this man Madison to escape from the obligations to the ship and his contract of Service legally entered into."
I most unequivocally deny that any officer of the Police felt the slightest personal interest about Madison, his concerns, or the Master of the "Ticindeer". It is an accusation as it is untrue.
10. Commodore Abbot mentions a report that Madison has been taken into the Service of Government. I presume this report to be entirely incorrect?
Madison has not been taken into the Service of Government. Had he applied to enter the police I should have considered him unfit for the Service.
